IPX1 and IPX2 Dripping Water Protection

Examples:  IEC 60529.

IPX1 Testing:

  • Dripping water with vertically falling drops.
  • Equipment under test (EUT), shall experience no harmful effects from the dripping water.
  • Test duration of 10 minutes and a water equivalent to 1mm of rainfall per minute.

IPX2 Testing:

  • Dripping water when tilted up to 15°.
  • Equipment under test (EUT ) shall experience no harmful effects when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15° from its normal position and exposed to dripping water.

Common Test Set Process:

  1.  Set Up:  A specially-designed drip tray is used for this test, with 1 representative unit used for the test, however additional units can be included for this test.
  2. Water Application:

A.      IPX1 : utilizes a turn table with the drip above the EUT, with a rotation of 1 revolution per minute, 100 mm away from the rotational axis.

B.      IPX2 test does not utilize a turntable but requires testing the EUT in four fixed positions while inclined at a 15-degree angle.

  1. Test Duration:
      1. IPX1 has a continuous 10 minute duration
      2. IPX2 has a test duration of 10 minutes divided into four 2.5-minute time frames, with each position tested separately.
  2. Evaluation: After completion, the exterior of the EUT is wiped down, and it is opened for inspection. In the event water ingress is noted during the testing would be reported to the manufacturer, who will then determine conditions of acceptability.
