IPX5 and IPX6 : Water Jets and Powerful Water Jets Certification Testing

Below is a brief description of IPX5 and IPX6 testing as detailed in IEC 60529:

IPX5 Water Jet Testing:

  • Water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm).
  • Equipment under test (EUT), shall experience no harmful effects from the water being sprayed against the enclosure from any direction.
  • Test duration of at least three minutes, with a water volume of 12.5 liters per minute and pressure of 30 kN/m² at distance of three meters.

IPX6 Powerful Water Jet Testing:

  • Water projected by a nozzle (12.5mm).
  • Equipment under test (EUT), shall experience no harmful effects from the water being sprayed against the enclosure from any direction.
  • Test duration of at least three minutes, with a water volume of 100 liters per minute and pressure of 100 kN/m² at distance of three meters.

IPX5 Water Jets and IPX6 Powerful Water Jets IP Code Testing Procedures

IPX5 Water Jet Testing

  1. Test Setup:  Requires use of a nozzle with an internal diameter of 6.3 mm to project water, with the  distance from the nozzle to the enclosure surface to be within the range of 2.5 to 3 meters.
  2. Water Application: Water pressure should be adjusted to provide a constant flow rate of 12.5 liters per minute.
  3. Test Time: Duration should be at least one minute per square meter of the enclosure’s surface area, with a minimum test time of three minutes.
  4. Evaluation: EUT is dried externally, and then the enclosure is opened for inspection after completing the testing.  In the event water ingress is found, it will need to be determined for conditions of acceptability regarding pass fail criteria provided by test plan or manufacturers intention.

IPX6 Powerful Water Jet Testing

1.      Test Setup: Water pressure is adjusted to achieve a delivery rate of approximately 100 liters per minute. Pressure is to remain constant throughout the duration of the test. The internal diameter of the nozzle is 120 millimeters.

2.      Water Application: High-pressure water jets are then directed at it from different angles. Distance from the nozzle to the enclosure should be between 2.5 and 3 meters.
