ISO 20653 Road vehicles — Degrees of protection (IP code)
— Protection of electrical equipment against foreign objects, water and access
ISO 20653 applies to degrees of protection (IP code)
provided by enclosures of the electrical equipment of road vehicles. It
specifies the following:
- a) designations
and definitions of types and degrees of protection provided by enclosures
of electrical equipment (IP codes) for the:- — protection
of electrical equipment within the enclosure against ingress of foreign
objects, including dust (protection against foreign objects); - — protection
of persons against access to hazardous parts inside the enclosure
(protection against access); - — protection
of electrical equipment inside the enclosure against effects due to
ingress of water (protection against water);
- — protection
- b) requirements
for each degree of protection; - c) tests
carried out in order to confirm that the enclosure complies with
requirements of the relevant degree of protection.
The ISO 20653 test standard specifies the testing
requirements based on the type of vehicle and mounting location of the device.
The types of vehicles include:
- Passenger
vehicles. - Motor
buses as well as commercial vehicles; special vehicles and road tractors
and relevant trailers. - Agricultural
tractors and relevant trailers - Motorcycles
- Vehicles
for special purposes
Testing includes those applications related to intended use
in a passenger compartment, engine compartment covered, engine compartment
exposed and eternal attachment. These specific test requirements range from
dripping water to splashing water, to spraying water to high-velocity water.
Each device’s requirement is determined by the mounting position.
